PRE-OP INSTRUCTIONS
Food and Drink Restrictions

GENERAL

Food/drink instructions:

  • Drink plenty of water (6-8 glasses) the day BEFORE surgery

  • Do NOT eat any FOOD, MILK or MILK products for 8 hours prior to arrival

  • Up until 2 hours prior to arrival you may have CLEAR liquids only (examples include water, apple juice, Gatorade)

 

Medications:

  • DO NOT TAKE:

    • NSAIDS (ibuprofen, motrin, naproxen, aleve, ketorolac or diclofenac) 5 days prior to surgery

    • If you are taking other bloodthinning medication like lovenox, please let us know at the preop appointment

    • Vitamins and all herbal supplements for 5 days prior to surgery

    • Fish oil for 1 day prior to surgery

  • TAKE: All your remaining morning medications on the day of surgery with a small sip of water

    • Let the anesthesiologist know if you are taking BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATION like losartan before surgery; a member of the anesthesiology team may contact you and give specific recommendations regarding this

    • Tylenol (acetaminophen) is ok to take
